The Importance of Radiographers in The Field of Medicine

Radiographers produce high quality medical images that guide doctors and other medical specialists and practitioners to assess, describe, monitor and treat injuries and other illnesses that affect internal organs. They use very technical medical equipment that are computerized to produce the images, these equipment are at the top of the technology and computerization within the field of medicine. Radiography or medical imaging is a pivotal aspect of medicine since the diagnosis and treatment of patients ultimately depend on the images produced. Though, there is a great deal of misunderstanding about radiations which are the basis of radiography. But with the advancements in technology and research, radiographers have been taught and equipped well to minimize the radiation dose to themselves, their patients and the general public. The occupational risks to radiographers are closely monitored with the use of specialized devices.

Radiographers have the scientific and technological background and understanding of the equipment used in modern radiography, and strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively with patients and doctors. During the course of their work they are required to demonstrate care and understanding and show genuine interest in the welfare of their patients. They are further required to explain to patients the need for adequate preparation and post examination care, and give them the nitty-gritty details of the radiography procedure.

Radiographers undergo thorough and extensive practical work during their university studies, which equip them with all the necessary skills and techniques to not only produce the medical images for doctors to examine but also advise their patients on what precautions to take to prevent further injury as they await medical diagnosis and treatment. They are very technical professionals equipped with all the knowledge needed to assist doctors diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries.

Radiographers work in a wide variety of places and institutions from public hospitals, private hospitals and private radiology centers. Their practice can be large or small, urban or rural so as to ensure the entire population gets the radiology services they require. In most rural areas in America and Australia, one is sure to find a diagnostic radiology or medical imaging facility so no section of the populations of the two countries ever miss out on the services of radiographers.  And there are also countless radiation therapy centers scattered all over the major towns and cities of the United States. Radiographers work in both the very large and very busy public hospitals with busy trauma sections and in small public and private ones.

Radiographers are also involved in the academia world, some lecture in public universities. They help in training medical doctors, other medical practitioners and radiographers.  They also contribute both directly and indirectly to research and technological advancements, through guiding postgraduate students in their research work. They supervise postgraduate students in studies relating to radiography and also work in medical research facilities that are tasked with coming up with new innovations, ideas and methods of treating the various injuries and illnesses that people often suffer from.
